Congratulations to our Westbrook High School Blue Blazes - CLASS B FOOTBALL STATE CHAMPIONS! They won the championship competition with a final score of 40-20 against the Cony High School Rams on Saturday, November 22 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland before an enormous crowd, beaming with Blue Blazes pride. Our WHS Cheerleaders led our fans along with the WHS Blue Blazes Marching Band which also included several alumni players. Congratulations to Coach Sam Johnson, an English teacher and WHS alumni and football player from the class of '14 who was also named Coach of the Year, and his coaching and training staff, including assistant coach Chris Nelson was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Congratulations also to Athletic Director Mark Campbell, WHS co-Principals Patrick Colgan, Jeff Guerette, and Wendy Harvey, and Athletics Administrative Assistant Jody Shackley for all of your hard work and support. Thanks also to Kellie Hall who coached the cheerleaders, Transportation Director Melissa Foye and our bus drivers who brought students to events all season long, and Kyle Smith who leads our New England Championship Marching Band and Color Guard and organized the most amazing pep band and National Anthem performance at a Championship Game. After the game, the Team was escorted back to historic Olmstead Field to ring the Victory Bell and celebrate with their families and friends in a procession escorted by Westbrook Police, Fire, and Rescue. Other celebrations are planned in the coming weeks.
This is the first time that the Blue Blazes have won the gold ball. It has been a stunning season of growth, skill, strength, and sportsmanship for our team. They have earned this title and made us all very proud. Go Blazes!
